Melissa Frost’s work is tinged with pop culture references, sardonic humor and dark undertones. Although uncomfortable themes are approached there is a playful quality, which treats the observer as an active participant in the proffered reality. Much of Frost’s work addresses an era in the not too distant past, which is already intrinsic in the creation of contemporary mythologies. One element, a critical examination of post war themes such as atomic disaster, militarization, space exploration and teenage angst, reflects the human race’s uncanny ability towards the repetition of mistakes, decade after decade. Internalization is key to understanding her observation of the fragmented 20th century, where fantasy worlds emerge powerfully through the deconstruction of reality.
